On Wednesday, my good friend and fellow RISD grad, Tamara El-Aasser, came to RISD to recruit students for an internship with the popular retail store, Anthropologie, where she is currently the Senior Designer of Housewares. Tamara is looking for a Design Intern to assist in the development of products, help with the organization of samples and trims and work with overseas factory shipments.
With a RISD degree in Printmaking, Tamara was always interested in texture and pattern and always had an affinity for antiques and kitschy objects. In her position, Tamara gets to travel the world seeking inspiration for bedding, curtains, lampshades, tableware, furniture and more!
Shortly after graduating in 2oo3, Tamara began interning at Anthropologie and then quickly worked her way up to the senior position she holds now. Anthropologie hires 50 summer interns every year! These positions and many more, are regularly posted on the risd/careers/ job and internship database called Artworks. This resource is password-protected and only available to RISD students and alumni, making it an incredibly valuable tool for professional development.
Roughly 85% of RISD students participate in a professional internship before they graduate. RISD has organized thousands of on-going partnerships with artists, designers and companies all over the country. Students receive six academic credits for doing an internship, and many report that they are hired more quickly after graduation and have a higher starting salary due to their internship experience.
risd/careers/ is now on Facebook! Connect here for up-to-date info on programs, websites, articles and more to help students and alumni achieve their creative and professional goals.
