RISD Commencement 2013

This past Saturday, RISD celebrated with the Class of 2013, as they crossed the stage and received their diplomas. Families, friends and fellow students cheered on as the class entered the Convention Center. The graduates entered with a glorious ensemble of musicians, The Extraordinary Rendition Band.

It is a RISD tradition that graduate decorate their robes in festive and humorous decor. Check out the pics below to see our happy students proceed into their next journey.

Meeting Sara Vanderbeek

I travel for recruitment from September through January and meet so many individuals interested in RISD. It’s not uncommon to meet someone who has a RISD connection or shared experience. This truly shows us how small the world can be and how far reaching the RISD connection spans.

During my Fall 2012 recruitment travel, during a layover, I met Sara Vanderbeek RISD ’03 Printmaking.  Sara noticed I was wearing a RISD tee shirt. She approached me and told me that she attended RISD. We travelled on an airport shuttle together and from our short conversation, I learned that Sara is based in Austin, TX and works as a full-time artist. She shared with me her path after graduation and how she became a painter even though her focus in school was Printmaking.

Check out her post about her journey after RISD to becoming a successful portrait painter.

Learning From Others

SharedAmong the possibilities available to fill your day at RISD are the many creative visitors who stream to the campus.  Artists, designers, musicians, writers and leaders of every possible stripe spend time here speaking, in critiques and learning and observing themselves.

One of our most expansive lecture series is Shared Voices, which is sponsored by the President’s Office and brings thinkers from beyond the immediate boundaries of art and design.  From particle physicists to learning technologists, these speakers expand the connections that visual creators have to one another and to the broader universe.  The pace of change we are all experiencing can be both unsettling and exhilarating, and these Shared Voices visitors help us capitalize upon our moment in this broad arc of the path into the future.
